Could Ducati and Piaggio merge?

E-mail Print PDF
Could Ducati and Piaggio merge?Despite unconditional denials by Piaggio's owner, Immsi, rumors of a possible merger between Ducati and Piaggio are intensifying in Italy. Word is that leading global management consultancy McKinsey & Company has been contracted to evaluate potential merger candidates for the struggling Piaggio Group and that the now privately-controlled Ducati is being tipped as the best option.

In an official statement, Immsi defined as baseless, "any assumptions about possible integration of the Piaggio Group and other industry groups." The company then goes on to deny "categorically, that they have heard of projects or documents of any kind, developed by McKinsey in relation to that hypothesis."

You're likely familiar with the Ducati brand already, but many people don't realize that, in addition to manufacturing scooters under its own name, Piaggio owns Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi, Vespa, Gilera and Ligier.

Video: Xaus wipes out Haga

Ruben Xaus had a terrible opening weekend at Phillip Island last week, crashing three times during practice leaving him with no spare bikes for race day. Then, during Sunday's warm up, he lost his front end while braking and wiped out Noriyuki Haga. He decided not to race after that fourth crash. Rumors are flying that this could be the end of Xaus's season, but BMW is currently supporting the rider. The photo above is of one of his practice crashes, the video below shows him wiping out Haga; thanks to the sorry state of international racing broadcasting, it's just made it online.

After what felt like a thinly veiled R1 commercial in part one, Yamaha has released the second installment of its One on One series with Ben Spies and Eddie Lawson. The two famed Yamaha riders talk about what makes a professional motorcycle racer tick, including their competitive nature, reaction to fans, and being called a Champion. We'd say the first clip is a pass, but this second video is pretty insightful, and worth the 7 minutes of your time.

Video: 2010 Honda CB1100 in motion

The 2010 Honda CB1100 you see here goes on sale in Japan next week. It'll be available in red, black and white; with or without ABS and with a choice high or low handlebars. Prices start at ¥950,000, which equates to about $1,600 cheaper than the Japanese price of a CBR600RR. We still don't know if the CB1100 will make it to American shores, but that price comparison does indicate that if it does, a $10-11,000 starting price would be a reasonable guess. The production bike's styling is almost 100 percent faithful to the CB1100F concept that was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007. That's a good thing, the CB1100 is gorgeous. Looking at the complete specs indicates that the riding experience is going to be as retro as the looks; 87bhp and 535lbs (wet) do not a performance bike make.

BMW returns to Isle of Man TT after 30-year absence

BMW returns to Isle of Man TT after 30-year absenceBMW will enter a single S1000RR superbike in this year's Isle of Man TT, the first time a BMW has been officially entered since the late 1970s. The BMW S1000RR's development rider, Rico Penzkofer, will race the bike in both the Superbike and Senior TT races. Penzkofer is returning to the island for the second time, having raced in both Supersport races there last year, he also placed fifth at last year's Macau Grand Prix. BMW first raced at the TT in 1937 and has won 30 races there, mostly in the sidecar class.

With KTM entering the TT for the first time, that gives the Isle of Man an incredibly robust field for the June race.
